What makes one have low self esteem? As a woman, I can think of literally hundreds of reasons why any one of us would and could have a low self image, but it really makes no sense as a Christian to feel that way. When we think of how God loves us and has formed us in His very image, perhaps it is not as important what our SELF image looks like. After all, He did not make us in our own image, but in His image.
The lie we see here is that we from time to time believe that we actually were formed in our own image. In other words, we search and prod into our deepest being to find who we really are. We read volumes of self help books only to find our selves right back where we first started.
For I can look at myself and point out every thing in my character, my physical attributes etc. which might cause me to feel poorly of myself and roll around in that mire for awhile, or, I can look at HIS image He has and is forming in me.
It has to do with the mirror we gaze in every day. Paul said that we look into a mirror darkly. It is fuzzy and foggy and we can not quite tell who is in the mirror, but then one day we look face to face in the mirror and it is not who we thought it would be. We look and see the image of Christ in us and there is no flaw, only the radiance of his beauty. Then the mirror becomes not an image we can scrutinize and criticize, but an image we can love.
We are told to not judge and that is a foundational principle, but to not judge does not end with others, it ends when we do not judge our own selves. When we judge ourselves we turn the the mirror towards ourselves. When we cease to judge, we see through the mirror, if you will, and begin to see what He sees in others and love like He loves. The tables are turned. Our sight is changed from inward to outward. We then know we were truly made in His image which is far greater than being made in the image of any other woman in the world.

Glad you posted this, because it seems that lately all I've been reading about in the Word is "humility", which is having a profoundly realistic understanding of ourselves. We know our weakness and our strengths and know both can glorify God - when I am weak, He is strong, and is glorified in my weakness, and He is also glorified in my strengths because my strengths are gifts from Him. A realistic view of being His daughter, who does her best to walk uprightly and with humility is worth far more than the self esteem the world sells thru self help. Thanks for posting this!
