Have we really come as far as women as we believe? Born in the 50’s, a teen in the 60’s and a young woman in the 70’s, I’ve seen many movements of women seeking their freedoms in the working world and even their sexual freedom.
Looking back at the generations before me, there have always been women here and woman there who would rise up and prove that it was not impossible for one to step into her God given destiny. Often as not, as a young Christian, I would read stories about missionaries…women missionaries…who were willing to give their own lives for the sake of the gospel like Annie Armstrong.
But each generation as far back as my grandparents who were born in the late 1800’s until present, was identified by the way women dressed or the lifestyle women lived. Let me give you an example. When one thinks of the roaring 20’s, the first image one has is of a flapper in her above the knee dress…defying the traditions of the day. In the 50’s, it was the bobby socked teen with a poodle skirt. The 60’s and 70’s brought the hippie movement and women who freely gave themselves physically, emotionally and spiritually in the pursuit of “love”. Women were at the core of each movement in each generation whether for the good, or the bad.
The present day woman has once again marked this generation. Yet this period is not known just for the dress or the rebellion of the heart or the desire to be loved, but for the death of unborn children…both boys and girls.
I think it is time we change the way the generations to come view us. It is time to be known as women of courage and conviction…women of strength and resolve to do what is right no matter the cost. It is time to no longer be identified by our dress, but by the clothing of righteousness we wear. No longer to be identified by our breasts, but by the breastplate of righteousness…women able to suckle the next generation of women to follow in our footsteps. It is time to really see who we are in the eyes and heart of a heavenly Father who so absolutely adores us so that we can be His women to bring about real change for our world.
This is the season for godly women to step into visible positions of government, politics, health and medicine, media, finance, social and spiritual arenas paving the way for the women of this world to move into a full knowledge of God in them.
Let us become women of courage like Queen Esther of old, ready to put our all on the line to save…not destroy. I pray for the hearts of women to become supple again…supple to receive from our maker His heart so that true change…true righteousness…true freedom can come to us once again.
